Passive House Settlement in Freiburg, Germany. The Project “Passive House Settlement in Freiburg“ aims to erect six buildings with altogether 90 units for mixed use (80% housing, 20% working space) in the North-Western corner of Quartier Vauban. The district development “Quartier Vauban” aims to provide housing with a minimum energy supply for heating, high living quality and integration into the neighbourhood and given infrastructure - while at the same time minimising the extra costs in relation to standard buildings. A team of architects and engineers, specialised in modelling low energy houses and solar gains, has been invited to plan the six buildings. The planning is based on the experiences of previous passive house case studies.
Passivehouse – Wohnen & Arbeiten. A multifamily passive house constructed in 1999 and records from its heating periods since that. The results are consistently only positive.

Within the framework of the subprogram “Building for Tomorrow”, the Center of Appropriate Technology (GrAT/Gruppe Angepasste Technologie) at the Vienna University of Technology developed an integrated total concept with its “S-HOUSE” that combines all relevant aspects of sustainable building methods. An innovative building project has resulted with the S-HOUSE, which meets the high standard of energy for the passive house method and also demonstrates the appropriate use of building materials derived from renewable raw materials.

Solar Heating & Cooling Programme – Task 28/38 will address cost optimization of the mix of concepts reducing energy losses, increasing useable solar gains and efficiently providing backup in order to achieve the same high performance. This comprehensive approach has the potential to increase market penetration through greater architectural freedom, improved living quality, owner pride in using renewable energy, and acceptable total costs. To adapt the solar houses to a larger part of the housing market, studies of the national trends and the governmental goals for the housing industry will be carried out.
